Senior Commercial Recoveries Specialist
DataTech Recruitment is seeking a seasoned professional to join our client, a leader in the credit and financial services sector, as a Senior Commercial Recoveries Specialist. Based in Johannesburg, Gauteng, this role is tailored for a collector who thrives on high-stakes challenges—handling aged accounts, disputed debts, and significant balances that require strategic, expert intervention.
Our client views recovery as a professional discipline rather than a script-based task. They are looking for an experienced individual who can exercise sound judgment, navigate complex corporate landscapes, and take full ownership of a diverse portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Commercial Recoveries Specialist, you will be expected to manage a comprehensive portfolio of commercial and corporate debtors, ranging from SMEs to large-scale trusts and corporations. Your daily responsibilities include:
- Commercial Collections: Assess the unique requirements of each account to determine the most effective recovery path, whether through negotiation, structured repayment, or formal escalation.
- Negotiation & Strategy: Negotiate settlements and acknowledgments of debt within your delegated authority, while prioritizing your book based on value, risk, and recovery probability.
- Legal & Pre-Legal Management: Oversee the transition of accounts into legal recovery. This involves preparing meticulous handover packs and collaborating effectively with attorneys, liquidators, sheriffs, and business rescue practitioners.
- Investigative Tracing: Utilize CIPC records, credit bureau data, and specialized tools to trace directors, sureties, and trustees. You will translate these findings into actionable recovery strategies.
- Risk Assessment: Analyze financial statements and payment patterns to judge collectability, balancing recovery value against legal costs and timeframes.
Professional Requirements
To succeed in this role, you must possess the experience to handle complex portfolios with autonomy and precision. We are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:
- Grade 12 certificate coupled with a relevant qualification (NQF Level 6 or higher) in Credit Management, Debt Recovery, Finance, Commerce, or Legal Studies.
- Mandatory registration with the Council for Debt Collectors.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in B2B or commercial debt collection, with a focus on high-value, complex portfolios.
- Practical, hands-on experience with liquidation, business rescue, insolvency, and sequestration processes.
- Strong working knowledge of the Companies Act, Insolvency Act, Prescription Act, and POPIA.
- Proficiency in Excel and experience working with specialized collections or CRM systems.
- Exceptional diplomacy and resilience, with the ability to maintain professionalism during difficult negotiations.
