DataTech Recruitment is currently seeking a highly experienced Lead Software Developer to join a prominent team in Johannesburg. As the technical anchor for a cross-functional development team, you will build full-stack web and API solutions from the database through to the UI. This is a hands-on “player-coach” position where you will remain deep in the code, conducting rigorous pull request reviews, unblocking your team, and making critical architectural decisions that impact the business long-term. You will be joining an environment that operates under high-availability and regulatory standards, where quality and resilience are prioritised over quick-fix solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and deploy end-to-end features across front-end, back-end, API, and database layers.
- Own the technical solution design for all features, including data modelling, API contracts, and UI patterns.
- Define and enforce coding standards, testing protocols, and the “definition of done” across the team.
- Drive architectural decisions to ensure the system remains scalable, secure, and maintainable.
- Facilitate code reviews and pairing sessions that genuinely improve code quality and team capability.
- Mentor senior, intermediate, and junior engineers through regular 1:1 sessions and ongoing support.
- Collaborate closely with QA, Product, and DevOps to ensure secure, tested, and efficient delivery.
- Champion the safe and effective use of AI coding assistants and integrate AI-powered features into production.
- Communicate technical risks, trade-offs, and project progress to leadership and stakeholders.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT, or a related field; Cloud or Agile certifications are considered an advantage.
- 10+ years of professional experience in full-stack web application development.
- Minimum of 3 years in a technical leadership capacity, including code reviews, mentorship, and directing technical strategy.
- Proficiency in modern back-end stacks (.NET/C#, Node.js, or Java) and front-end frameworks (Angular, React, Next.js, Vue, or Svelte).
- Strong fundamentals in TypeScript and modern JavaScript, including component-driven architecture and state management.
- Proven experience with cloud delivery on Azure or AWS, with a natural proficiency in containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Prior experience within financial technology, banking, or other highly regulated, high-availability environments.
- Confidence in using AI-assisted development tools (such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or Cursor) and experience building AI-powered features (RAG, embeddings, prompt engineering).
