We are currently looking for a skilled and dedicated Assistant Payroll Manager to join our team in Johannesburg. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily activities of the payroll department, ensuring that our processes remain efficient, accurate, and fully compliant with all statutory regulations. This is an ideal position for a seasoned professional with extensive Payspace experience who is ready to take on a high-volume, challenging environment.

Core Responsibilities
As the Assistant Payroll Manager, you will lead the payroll functions for approximately 10 companies and roughly 2 000 staff members, spanning both wages and salaries. Your primary duties will include:
- Overseeing all capturing, reconciling, and control processes.
- Managing departmental budgets, including monitoring actuals against projections.
- Handling complex tax submissions and ensuring full statutory compliance.
- Managing provisions for bonuses, leave, and retrenchments, as well as reporting on EE and labour statistics.
- Providing input into organizational policies and workflows related to medical aid, garnishees, and other benefits.
- Managing the interfaces between the payroll system and Time & Attendance software.
- Mentoring and developing direct reports to ensure high performance.
- Maintaining audit-ready processes and actively participating in payroll strategy and special projects.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must meet the following criteria:
- Grade 12 certificate accompanied by a tertiary qualification in Payroll Management.
- A minimum of 10 years of professional payroll experience.
- At least 4 years of experience specifically in a payroll management role (this is non-negotiable).
- Demonstrated success running payrolls for a large headcount (± 2 000 staff across multiple entities).
- Advanced proficiency in Payspace, specifically at the parameter and reporting levels.
- A solid background in accounting with strong reconciliation capabilities.
- Extensive experience in budget compilation and control.
- In-depth knowledge of current legislation, including the LRA, BCEA, COIDA, OSHA, POPI, the Income Tax Act, the Wage Determination Act, and various Bargaining Council Agreements.
- Advanced skills in MS Excel and Word.
- A valid Code 08 driver’s licence.
