Vine Recruitment is looking for a dedicated and experienced professional to fill the role of Garden / Estate Manager for a prestigious private estate in Cape Town. We are seeking an individual who will take full ownership of the care, maintenance, and ongoing development of these exceptional grounds. This is a hands-on position, perfectly suited to a candidate with a genuine passion for horticulture and a meticulous eye for detail.
Key Responsibilities of the Garden / Estate Manager
- Oversee the daily maintenance and presentation of the entire estate’s gardens and grounds.
- Plan and execute all horticultural tasks, including planting, pruning, fertilizing, mowing, and seasonal care.
- Maintain lawns, flower beds, trees, shrubs, hedges, and landscaped features to the highest standard.
- Manage and monitor irrigation systems, ensuring timely repairs and proactive problem-solving.
- Lead, supervise, and coordinate the daily activities of the gardening team.
- Allocate tasks efficiently to ensure all work meets estate standards.
- Ensure the proper maintenance and care of all gardening equipment, tools, and machinery.
- Oversee inventory levels for plants, fertilizers, pesticides, and other essential supplies.
- Coordinate with external contractors and specialist services as required.
- Drive ongoing landscaping and garden improvement projects.
- Implement preventative maintenance schedules to keep the estate grounds in immaculate condition.
- Monitor the health of all plant life and trees, taking corrective action when necessary.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment at all times.
- Provide regular reports on maintenance requirements, project progress, and any issues affecting the estate.
Minimum Requirements
- Proven professional experience in a role such as Garden / Estate Manager, Head Gardener, or a similar senior position.
- Deep horticultural knowledge combined with extensive practical gardening experience.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise a gardening team effectively.
- Strong technical knowledge of plant health, tree care, lawn maintenance, and seasonal pruning.
- Proficiency in the management and maintenance of irrigation systems.
- Familiarity with the safe operation and upkeep of professional garden machinery.
- Excellent organizational and planning capabilities.
- The ability to work independently and take full ownership of site requirements.
- Unwavering attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high aesthetic standards.
- Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in varying conditions.
- A valid driver’s license is considered an advantage.
- A formal horticultural qualification is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will be a reliable, hands-on leader who takes genuine pride in the presentation of the estate. You should possess the confidence to manage a team while remaining actively involved in the practical, day-to-day work. Previous experience working on private estates, luxury properties, hotels, or wine estates will be considered highly advantageous for this role.
